What Are Hunting Binoculars?

What to consider when buying binoculars?

A good pair of binoculars is essential for any hunter. When choosing which binocular to purchase, there are several things that need to be considered: the power rating, magnification, objective diameter, field of view, waterproof capabilities, lens diameter, size and weight.

What is The Power Rating?

The power rating is what describes how much zoom your binoculars will have. This can be considered one of the more important factors as it directly affects the magnification of your device. A higher power rating means your device magnifies further than say a lower power rating. It’s also generally cheaper to purchase a binocular with a lower power rating but I’ll discuss more pricing later on.

What is Magnification?

Magnification is directly linked to the power rating of your binoculars. It’s measured by how many times closer you can view an object than if you were looking at it without your binoculars. For example, the Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 Binoculars (which has a power rating of 8× and a magnification of 42) will allow you to view an object 8 times closer than if you were viewing with the naked eye.

What is Objective Lens Diameter?

The objective lens diameter is the width of your binocular’s main lens in millimeters. It’s usually measured in the middle of the lens but some binoculars measure it on one side. When looking at a binocular, if you see an ‘8×42’ on the sides or top/bottom of your binoculars that means that your binocular has a 42mm objective lens diameter. This is not as important as other factors but it’s still recommended to keep this in mind.

How big is my Field of View?

The field of view is measured by how wide your binoculars can see. A lower number means you will get a wider angle and vice-versa. However, if you need your binoculars for hunting purposes only worry about the width at 1,000 yards. The Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 binoculars have a field of view of 341 feet at 1,000 yards.

How waterproof is my Binocular?

When choosing your binoculars it’s best to keep in mind that they will get wet eventually if you’re using them for hunting purposes! It’s essential that your binoculars be waterproof or at least water-resistant. Waterproof means that your binoculars can withstand being submerged in water (but it doesn’t mean you should test this out!) and Water Resistant means that they will not react to light rain.

What is a good size for my Binocular?

Having a smaller pair of binoculars can be inconvenient sometimes because you have to put them down more often. However, carrying a larger pair can feel cumbersome and it’s not ideal for hunters in tighter spaces. When choosing your binoculars, it’s recommended that an average-sized person would use a 7×36 or 8×42 pair of binoculars with a weight of around 1kg.

However, if you’re a hunter in a smaller category (such as a child) I suggest opting for smaller binoculars such as the Nikon BDC Monarch 5 8×25 Binoculars.

How Much Should I Spend on Hunting Binoculars?

Binoculars can be very expensive and some hunters are willing to spend up to $1,000 or more but, really a few hundred dollars can be enough to get a perfectly good pair. In fact, while we’re talking about price, here are some of the best hunting binoculars on the market today. Enjoy.
