If you are looking for the best canoe for your dog, then this article is meant for you! There are many canoes on the market that claim to be “dog friendly” but what does that really mean?
Well, it means different things to different people.
Some people like their canoe to be lightweight and portable while others prefer a more stable boat with plenty of space. For some dogs, it might mean finding a canoe that has thick rails around the edge so they don’t fall in. There are many factors to consider and, of course, a range of models for different budgets.
So, what do you need to know before buying your first canoe that will carry your favorite canine? What size do I need? Can I use it both on saltwater or freshwater? Well, these questions will all be answered in this article!

What Material Should I Go For?
Canoes are usually made of either fiberglass or aluminum. Fiberglass canoes have a tendency to break more easily but they are lighter and easier to carry. Aluminum canoes, on the other hand, tend to last longer, especially if you plan on using them in saltwater but, you’ve got it – they are more expensive. However, both options work well for freshwater use though so don’t worry too much about that.
What Shape & Size?
Canoes come in a variety of shapes and sizes. A good dog canoe should have safety features to ensure your pet stays safe and secure while out on the water. The most important feature is a railing around the edge of the craft that will keep your pup from falling over when getting into or out of their seat. Ideally, you want something with spacing no larger than four inches between the railing and the edge of the canoe. This will help keep your furry friend from slipping through and into the water.
Another important feature is a flat bottom. A rounded bottom can make it difficult for dogs to get in and out as well and it’s more difficult to keep stable while paddling. Also, look for a canoe that has thick padding around the edge of the boat. This will make it more comfortable for your pup to lay on and provide a better grip which, again, keeps them safe.
Saltwater or Freshwater?
Canoes can be used either on saltwater or freshwater but you should always check with an expert before taking any type of watercraft into saltwater if you haven’t done so before. Saltwater is much more corrosive and can cause quite a bit of damage if you aren’t experienced with it. Of course, if you are offshore canoeing then you may well be further from shore so make sure you, and your pet if possible, are all equipped with lifejackets, just in case.
Also, make sure to check on the weight capacity of any canoe you are interested in buying! Some models have smaller ones that will support less weight, especially when your dog is standing up or moving around.
Now that you know what to look for, it’s time to find the perfect canoe for your dog! There are many different models on the market so take your time and find the one that is best suited for both you and your furry friend. Happy paddling!
